Ohio EPA Schedules Meeting to Discuss Diamond Shamrock Property

-

Columbus, OH – August 10, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Remediation plans for an old landfill located at the Diamond Shamrock Painesville Works site will be the focus of an Aug. 16, 2012, Ohio EPA public meeting. The information session and public hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at the Lake County General Health District located at 33 Mill Street, Painesville.

The meeting will provide citizens an opportunity to ask questions and submit comments concerning Ohio EPA’s preferred plan for a five-acre site known as Operable Unit 10 (OU10) – one of 24 operable units or parcels comprising the 1,100-acre Diamond Shamrock property. OU 10 is located near the Lake Erie shoreline in the northeast portion of the property and includes the “One Acre Site” landfill where a variety of industrial chemical wastes were buried between 1963 and 1970.

If approved, the preferred plan would require:

long-term operation and maintenance of the existing landfill cap, perimeter security fence, slope and shoreline stabilization, and ground water extraction system; continued monitoring of wells surrounding the landfill to ensure contaminants do not migrate to adjacent properties or Lake Erie; establishing an environmental covenant to prohibit construction of any structures on the landfill, residential land use and construction of buildings within 150 feet of the slurry wall, and the extraction of ground water; and developing a risk mitigation plan to address potential exposure to contaminated soils, ground water and other materials during future maintenance activities, and pre-trenching for all subsurface work to be conducted within the unit.

Comments concerning the preferred plan may be presented at the public hearing or submitted in writing to Ohio EPA’s Northeast District Office, attn.: Larry Antonelli, 2110 East Aurora Road, Twinsburg, OH 44087 or larry.antonelli (at) epa.state.oh (dot) us. The public comment period ends Aug. 31, 2012. All comments submitted by that date will be considered prior to taking a final action.

The preferred plan and related documents are available online through the Diamond Shamrock Community Relations Team and at the Morley Library in Painesville, Fairport Public Library in Fairport Harbor and Ohio EPA’s Northeast District Office in Twinsburg by first calling (330) 963-1200.
