Ohio EPA to Hold Public Information Session on Urban Setting Designation for Former Niles Tool Works Site
WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 17, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Ohio EPA will hold a public information session at 6 p.m. on Weds., Feb. 19, 2014, to discuss the city of Hamilton’s application for an urban setting designation (USD) for the former Niles Tool Works property. The meeting will take place at the Butler County General Service Building, first floor conference room, 315 High Street, Hamilton.
An urban setting designation recognizes that cleaning up area ground water to drinking water standards is not necessary because no one will be drinking the ground water. Other possible exposures to contaminated ground water (such as exposures to wildlife or streams in the area) still must be addressed even when a USD is granted for an area.
The proposed USD includes the 4.6-acre former Niles Tool Works property and a half-mile buffer zone around the property.
During the information session, Ohio EPA representatives will present details about the proposed USD and will respond to questions from the public.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
