OHFA Receives $1.07 Million Grant to Continue Supporting Foreclosure Counseling Across Ohio

COLUMBUS – April 18, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The Ohio Housing Finance Agency (OHFA) has been awarded $1,074,039 through the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling (NFMC) program to continue supporting the availability of foreclosure counseling and prevention services across the state. The grant will enable 18 housing counseling agencies across the state to continue to assist Ohio homeowners at-risk of foreclosure.

The NFMC program was created by Congress in 2007 to aid homeowners at risk of foreclosure by connecting them to trained housing counselors. The program is administered through a competitive application process by NeighorWorks America, an independent, Congressionally-chartered non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C.

This is the seventh round of funding through the NFMC program, which provided $70.1 million to 30 state housing finance agencies, 17 HUD-approved housing counseling intermediaries, and 72 community-based NeighborWorks organizations.

“OHFA is extremely happy to be able to continue to sustain these essential foreclosure counseling and prevention services to Ohio homeowners,” said Doug Garver, OHFA Executive Director. “These funds will provide vital counseling services for approximately 1,880 Ohio families who are facing difficulty paying their mortgage payments.”

To date, OHFA has received more than $11 million through the NFMC program. The program has been successful in reaching struggling Ohio homeowners with less than 1 percent of homeowners assisted through counseling services last year reporting having their homes foreclosed upon.
