Brown Announces Plans for More Than 600 New Veterans Housing Units in Dayton and Chillicothe

New Units will Provide Housing for Senior, Disabled, and Homeless Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 22, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown today announced that veterans in the Dayton and Chillicothe regions will have access to more than 600 new housing units. The units will be built on U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) land and provide housing for homeless Veterans, senior Veterans, disabled Veterans, and their families.

“The men and women of the Armed Forces have been made a promise that if they defend our country, a grateful nation will provide them with services and benefits they have earned,” Brown, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said. “We must end veterans homelessness and these new housing units in Dayton and Chillicothe are a down payment in the promise to support those who have already given so much to our nation.”

More than 300 units will be located at the Dayton VA Medical Center and the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. By locating these housing units on VA Medical Center campuses, Veterans will have ready access to care and treatment designed to help them attain long-term independence and self-sufficiency.

Brown, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, has fought to ensure that all veterans have access to safe and affordable housing. Earlier this year, Brown joined Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) in calling for the continuation of a VA program to prevent homelessness. A Republican budget proposal would have slashed the Housing Urban Development- Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, which keeps thousands of veterans off the streets and provides Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans along with case management and clinical services provided by the VA. Senator Brown and his colleagues successfully defeated the proposal.
