Treasurer Boyce Provides Tips to Avoid Foreclosure Scams

-

COLUMBUS, OH – March 2, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — In celebration of the 11th annual National Consumer Protection Week, Ohio Treasurer of State Kevin L. Boyce is reminding Ohioans to be wary of too-good-to- be-true foreclosure rescue scams.

“During these tough economic times our office is working hard to provide Ohioans with the necessary resources to make safe decisions in the event they fall behind on their mortgage payments,” said Treasurer Boyce. “Our number one priority at the Ohio Treasury Department is the financial security of Ohio families.”

In 2008, Ohio reported 85,773 new foreclosure filings. Associated with these new filings are default rescue scams, which promise to “stop foreclosure now!” and often “guarantee to save your home!” These scam artists obtain information from public records of foreclosure proceedings.

Unknowing victims have paid these scam artists hefty fees only to find out months later that nothing has been done to stop their home foreclosure. As part of the National Consumer Protection Week efforts, Treasurer Boyce wants to ensure that Ohioans know there are places to turn to for help.

The Ohio Treasury Department has partnered with several Ohio agencies in a program that provides information and counseling to Ohioans who fall behind in their mortgage payments. This program is called Save the Dream. Any Ohioan facing foreclosure and needing more information regarding the Save the Dream Program should visit www.savethedream.ohio.gov or call the Save the Dream hotline at 888.404.4674.

National Consumer Protection Week runs from March 1-7. The Treasurer’s Office will be releasing tips on home foreclosure scams, identity theft, and debt collection as part of National Consumer Protection Week, please visit www.ohiotreasurer.gov for details.
